How to Access an Old Trezor

Last Updated on

In most cases, it is advisable to update your Trezor to the latest firmware. However, in a few select cases, it might make sense to try to access your Trezor while it is running an older firmware and move all funds off of the device.

However, if you try to access your old Trezor without upgrading, you’ll quickly get stuck. Read on to find out how to get unstuck and access your funds quickly.

Appropriate Situations to Use Old Trezor Without Upgrading

If you have lost your recovery seed to your Trezor, you might not want to risk upgrading the firmware of your Trezor because if the firmware upgrade fails for any reason and wipes your Trezor, you might lose access to your cryptocurrency forever and have no way to restore it without the original recovery seed.

Additionally, if your Trezor One device is currently running firmware version 1.6.1, upgrading the firmware is guaranteed to wipe it, so do not upgrade unless you have your recovery seed.

Uh Oh… Clients Require Upgrade

If you try to access your Trezor running an old firmware version, you’ll find that the official Trezor Wallet as well as many web apps that use the Trezor Connect API will no longer be able to connect to it or they will ask you to upgrade your firmware to proceed.

This is because recent versions of the official Trezor Wallet and the Trezor Connect API deprecate support for very old firmware versions.

The Solution

Fortunately, there are older versions of the official Trezor Wallet online. There are also older versions of third-party applications online. These are basically snapshots of these applications from a while back, before they stopped supporting your version of Trezor firmware. You can use these to move your funds off of your old Trezor.

To solve the “The bitcore server doesn’t seem to reply.” error, you need to provide an updated backend URL. For example, the default “Bitcore Server URL” for Bitcoin Cash may be “https://bch-bitcore2.trezor.io”, which is out of date. Simply find the closest match for the currency on Trezor Status, which is “https://bch2.trezor.io” in this case and replace the old URL. Then it will work!
